FRAMINGHAM – OARS is hosting a Community Water Chestnut Pull on the Sudbury River this Saturday, June 14, from 9 am to noon at Simpson Park. The event combines paddling with conservation work to help protect local waterways from invasive water chestnut plants.
Water chestnut is an invasive aquatic species that can damage local water bodies, threatening ecosystems and limiting recreational access. Fortunately, some smaller invasions can be managed via volunteer hand-pulling.
Due to limited parking, there will be two check-in and launch locations (both will feed into the same paddling area): the Simpson Drive Launch next to 108 Simpson Drive or the Central Street Launch at 133 Central Street.
Paddle Boston will provide canoes, life jackets, and paddles. OARS asks that volunteers be proficient swimmers at least 12 years old. Wear closed-toe shoes and old clothes that can get wet to the event. A maximum of two people per boat is allowed, and minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please don’t bring pets.
