FRAMINGHAM – The city’s free summer Friday night outdoor concert series, which used to be “Concerts on the Common” in Framingham Centre, will be split this year between Framingham Centre and parks in south Framingham. This Friday’s (July 11) free concert with Night Camp (’60s and ’70s rock/pop classics) will be held at Butterworth Park on Grant Street.
The July 18 concert featuring The Gary Backstrom Band with The Coalboilers (classic rock and modern acoustic) will be back at the Common, as will concerts on Aug. 1 and Aug. 8. All concerts are scheduled from 6 to 8 pm.
You can see the full lineup on the city website and the new locations on my map at the end of this article. (Click on markers to see which concerts are happening on what dates.)
“We’re making music more accessible and inclusive by reaching every corner of our community,” Mayor Sisitsky said in explaining the change. Those “corners” for the Friday night series do not include Saxonville, Pinefield, Nobscot, or northwest Framingham, though. If you are looking for free outdoor concerts in this part of the city, check out the outdoor jazz concerts at McAuliffe Library in Nobscot. There are performances this Thursday, July 10, and Thursday, July 24, from 7 to 8 pm at Astronaut Grove behind the library building.
Also for those seeking free outdoor music nearby, particularly on nights other than Friday: The town of Wayland is hosting concerts on Thursdays July 10 and 17 from 7 to 8 pm outside their new community center on 8 Andrew Avenue (across from Russell’s Garden Center and next to the Wayland Town Center [with the Stop & Shop] on Rte. 20). Although not “in Framingham,” that location is often only a 10-minute drive from areas of District 2.
Wayland’s July 10 concert features The Deloreans with ’70s and ’80s music; July 17 is Classic Groove with “Smooth Jazz and Latin”.
