FRAMINGHAM – People of all faiths are invited to a “joyous and sacred Iftar meal” this Monday, Feb. 23, from 4:45 to 7 pm to celebrate the season of Ramadan.
The event is sponsored by the Multi-Faith Collaborative of Open Spirit and the Ahlulbayt School for Knowledge and will be held at Open Spirit, 39 Edwards St. in Saxonville on the campus of Edwards Church. Snow date will be Tuesday, February 24.
During Ramadan, observant Muslims fast during daylight hours and gather to break fast at sunset.
“We will gather as a multi-faith community to honor the traditions of those of us from the Muslim faith,” the announcement explains. The event will feature guest speakers Dr. Sadik Kasseim, a scientist specializing in gene therapy for cancer as well as interim chaplain of the Taha Collective non-profit; and Nisa Haider, a public health professional at Boston Medical Center supporting initiatives to improve care for underserved populations.
Following their reflections, attendees will pray together and share a fast-breaking meal. Attendees are invited to bring a favorite vegetarian dish to share.
“We invite you to make a donation to support our programming,” the Center says. “We suggest $20 – more if you can; less if you can’t! (If you are fasting during Ramadan, please come as our guests—no need to bring food or make a donation).”
Open Spirit asks that people register if they’re interested in attending so organizers can better plan and set up for the event, at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfkUkrMKxHy_M-F34-GJaepbqBWpLfW-D7LqAzJOWTZzi9h4A/viewform .
